The Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) is teaming up with the Best Friend library for a special event to commemorate the 8.8.88 pro-democracy uprising and to share information about our latest campaigns. Read on for all of the details, including how you can get involved...

• "8.8.88: Burma's Past + Future", Saturday 6 August, 7:30 p.m. at Sangdee Gallery, Chiang Mai

The 23rd anniversary of Burma's nation-wide uprising for democracy is an important opportunity to commemorate the struggle against dictatorship, while also focusing on the future of Burma. To this end, The Best Friend and DVB are collaborating on an event where attendees will be able to hear directly from participants about important events in Burma's recent past, while also learning more and becoming involved in current campaigns calling for justice and an end to crimes against humanity in Burma.

Speakers at this Saturday's event will include Aung Myo Min, an '88 student leader and executive director of the Human Rights Education Institute of Burma, and Kyaw Zwa Moe, a former political prisoner and current managing editor of The Irrawaddy. Both will discuss how their past experiences continue to shape and inform their work today.

In addition, we will learn about DVB's ongoing campaign to free its 17 video journalists currently jailed throughout Burma, as well as the campaign calling for the establishment of a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate human rights violations in Burma, and why both of these campaigns need your urgent assistance. Attendees will have the opportunity to assist in these campaigns directly following the event.

Finally, attendees will be treated to live music, visual displays, and complimentary Burmese snacks.

This significant event is taking place this coming Saturday 6 August, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Sangdee Gallery, 5 Sirimankhalajarn Road, Soi 5 in Chiang Mai. Admission is free.
